Safe Boating Awareness Week launch - Vancouver Event

On Saturday May 17th, 2014, with the weather in favour of the event, a very enthusiastic Vancouver kick-off of Safe Boating Awareness Week took place at Vanier Park. Various organizations took part in the promotion of boating safety including Mustang Survival, Royal Lifesaving Society’s WaterWise Team, MADD Canada, CPS, Paddle Canada, the RCMP, Vancouver Police Marine Team and Trailer and the RCM Auxiliary. There was a very positive response and turn out from local media with various interviews being conducted. This year’s Vancouver launch event received the most exposure from media outles compared to past events, securing both the noon and 6 pm evening news time slots on CTV and Global, the two most popular news channels, as well as being broadcast on other media outlets and radio channels.

The Deputy Mayor of Vancouver, Adrianne Carr, read out a Proclamation from the Mayor declaring Safe Boating Awareness Week and helped lead the Ready Set Wear It (RSWI) event that ended the official ceremony. Upon completion of the initial ‘kick-off’, the media conducted interviews, participated in on-water activities and got involved with a SUP demo from Paddle Canada. There were 39 participants this year for the 2014 RSWI event that is a part of the World Record attempt.
